PRIS ROOS Born in 1984 in Rhenen, NL. My parents come from Bogor, Indonesia. I live and work in Rotterdam, NL.
My work is inspired by my background from growing up in the toko. The TOKO is the Indonesian word for a small restaurant and/or supermarket which sell Asian food products. As a child, I grew up in the toko. From the age of 7, my family and I lived above our family business and later on I helped in the supermarket by stocking up products and deliveries and now I still work part-time in the kitchen and preparing meals for the other. The toko feels like a home where every one comes for food, but also encounters with others of the same interest or background. During work, I observe and interact with different kinds of individuals with different backgrounds.
The person in front of me is a reflection of myself.
I am interested in the quirkiness, the stories and the uniqueness of a single person. For me, the acquaintances in our lives are of great interest to me as an artist. Mostly I try to depict the characteristics of an individual in a painting, but sometimes I can also wander to video, performance or into sound.
