Oliver Youth Counter-Ad Workshops

How might we empower high school students to design their own solutions to prevent underage drinking?

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Youth who drink alcohol are at greater risk of dropping out of school, participating in unprotected sex, getting arrested, driving drunk, committing suicide or homicide, and abusing drugs. When local Baltimore students were surveyed about underage drinking, 37.5% of eleventh graders reported alcohol use in the past 30-days. Since 2012, MICA has worked directly with Baltimore high schoolers in the Oliver Community to tackle underage drinking. Through a series of interactive design workshops, the students co-create peer-to-peer counter-ad campaigns for their community that expose the realities of underage drinking that alcohol companies try to hide.
