To overcome this failed communication with my uncle, I forced myself to face the confrontation again. Through Buddy Network I got to know the chronically ill Denise. She has a severe form of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Because of this she lost her mobility and spends most of her days inside. As a volunteer I visit Denise once a week to help her with practical matters, but mostly for the social contact and support. I tried to capture Denise’s story and our relationship trough documentary photography. I collected these photo’s and findings in a photobook. | To overcome this failed communication with my uncle, I forced myself to face the confrontation again. I’ve personally experienced the difficulty of this. Three years ago I received the news that my uncle was terminally ill. I feel embarrassed to admit this but out of fear of saying the wrong thing, I did nothing. I didn’t even send a card.
A lack of communication can lead to loneliness and social isolation, but effective communication can bring you connection and purpose. By opening up and sharing my personal experience I would like to create awareness and ask for your attention regarding this social problem.
The advice I would like to give you is to learn more about illness and death, before you get confronted with it. This will help you to stay in contact with someone in times of loss and grief.
Someone within your environment might go trough a similar situation right now. In this case you might be struggling with finding the right words. Because I regret not even sending my sick uncle a card, I would like to help you out. That’s why I created a space where you can write and send a card, designed by Denise & me, to that person. Don’t postpone this any longer and let them know you care.
Next time I’ll be there, and you?Links
