Bij mij in de buurt, tussen Afrikaanderwijk en Kop van Zuid ligt de stadskruidentuin Rotterdamse Munt. Deze kruidentuin is gestart op een braakliggend terrein in het ontwikkelingsgebied ‘Parkstad’. In 2014 is deze tuin aangelegd door het initiatief Bureau Botersloot met als oprichter Ingrid Ackermans en een aantal buurtbewoners. Ingrid heeft bij de Gemeente Rotterdam gewerkt en heeft daarnaast veel meegewerkt aan andere projecten in Rotterdam Zuid. Ze is zelf erg betrokken bij de buurt en de inwoners. De initiatiefnemers van Rotterdamse Munt merkten dat er behoefte was aan wat groen in de buurt en hebben deze tuin aangelegd.

Afgelopen zomer ben ik vaak wezen zwemmen in Afrikaanderwijk. Dit zwembad ligt praktisch naast de Rotterdamse Munt. Zo nu en dan ging ik na het zwemmen even een gebakje eten en wat bijkletsen in de kruidentuin. De geur is er heerlijk, en de sfeer ook. Er is altijd wel iemand aanwezig om een gesprek mee te voeren en een bakkie koffie mee te drinken. Al het groen in deze kruidentuin veroorzaakt een sterk contrast met de ruimte eromheen. Rotterdam staat vol met gebouwen en beton. Deze kruidentuin brengt meer leven en licht in Rotterdam Zuid. De mensen die er werken doen het met plezier, anders zouden ze het niet doen. Er werken veel verschillende soorten mensen uit de buurt. Sommige zijn buitenlands, andere zijn studenten en weer andere zijn met pensioen en hebben behoefte aan bezig zijn en interactie met andere mensen. Voor deze mensen is de kruidentuin een ontmoetingsplaats, maar ook een plaats om te leren en te groeien.

Het doel van Rotterdamse Munt is om samen te werken aan een vitale stad en de stad groener te maken. Daarnaast wordt er in de kruidentuin creativiteit gestimuleerd door de vrijwilligers te laten nadenken over ontwikkelingen, projecten en verbeteringen binnen de tuin. Zo wordt er elke week vergaderd en ruimte gemaakt om ieders ideeën aan elkaar te laten horen. Deze sociale interactie zorgt ervoor dat mensen van verschillende achtergronden bij elkaar worden gebracht en zich meer betrokken voelen bij de buurt en de medemens. De vrijwilligers die er werken hebben een duidelijke structuur met een aantal vaste taken. Daarnaast is er ook ruimte voor de vrijwilliger om andere werkzaamheden uit te voeren of zelf met ingevingen te komen. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de vrijwilliger gestimuleerd wordt om talenten te ontdekken en te ontwikkelen.

Rotterdamse Munt verkoopt niet alleen producten aan particulieren maar ook aan horeca gelegenheden binnen Rotterdam. Zo is de Marokkaanse munt, de Appelmunt, de Basilicummunt en Pepermunt uit de tuin van Rotterdamse Munt te vinden in bijvoorbeeld Restaurant Dertien en het café van de Kunsthal. De munt wordt dezelfde dag geoogst en is daarnaast helemaal biologisch. Op deze manier steunen de lokale bedrijven en ondernemingen elkaar.

De kruidentuin wordt gefinancierd door Rotterdamse bedrijven, nationale fondsen en lokale overheden. Er wordt gewerkt aan een eigen verdienmodel zodat Rotterdamse Munt zelfstandig kan blijven bestaan als sociale onderneming. Zo kunnen maatschappelijke doelen worden gerealiseerd met de opbrengsten uit de eigen verkoop van Rotterdamse Munt. Zo worden de inkomsten bijvoorbeeld geïnvesteerd in cursussen en opleidingen voor de vrijwilligers om zo hun vakkennis te vergroten.

Rotterdamse Munt is een kruidentuin met vele mogelijkheden en toepassingen. Uit eigen ervaring kan ik zeggen dat het een inspirerende en uitnodigende plek is. Aankomende zomer zou ik graag een dag in de week vrijwilligerswerk verrichten in de tuin. De mensen die er werken hebben er plezier in en kijken positief uit hun ogen. De kruidentuin ligt op een plek waar ooit gebouwd gaat worden. Wat niet helemaal duidelijk is, is wat er met Rotterdamse Munt gaat gebeuren als ze van deze locatie verwijderd worden. Ze willen erna in ieder geval door als onderneming. Niet voor de winst, maar voor de kwaliteit. Hoe en waar ze dit gaan doen is voor mij nog onduidelijk. Wellicht dat ze hier alvast over na kunnen denken. Verder heb ik weinig aan te merken op het concept en vind ik het een heel tof initiatief. Door mensen uit de buurt en lokale ondernemingen te betrekken bij het geheel, groeien de mensen, en de stad ook. Op sociaal, cultureel en financieel gebied.

Beyond Social began as an initiative from Iris Schutten, Program Leader Social Practices WdKA (2013-2017), in collaboration with Kimmy Spreeuwenberg, Teacher and Coordinator of Hybrid Publishing at Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA), University of Applied Sciences in Rotterdam. Right from the start Beyond Social aimed at being a platform for a wider community than WdKA

It was built by André Castro and Manetta Berends, media artists and researchers who teach/have also taught at the Experimental Publishing master's of Piet Zwart Institute. Currently, they participate in the running of Varia, a space for developing collective approaches to everyday technology.
