Beyond Social is a space that is cared for and developed collectively. The labor of maintaining this space is affective, technical and at times challenging. We[1] wish for this space to always be welcoming for contributors and conducive to collaboration.

[1] Who is the we? The custodians of this page, who have taken on the task of developing Beyond Social as a learning platform. They speak from this position of vested responsibility, and sign this statement accordingly. They do not speak on behalf of all the users, but have crafted this statement to make the user experience as inclusive, critical, and welcoming as possible.

Intentions

... can be different from reality, action, or practice. These intentions are true at the time of writing, with a note that the community of practice can modify these over time.

BS intends to be:

++ A space for collective learning, for building a body of knowledge in common.

++ An attempt to complexify ideas of collective authorship and open-source sharing, to acknowledge that collectivity does not exclude subjective experience and openness does not always protect those who need protection. The fact that this is a collective work does not mean that all parts of the work are free to use by anyone and for any means, as it is not always the case that all members of the collective agree on all points, which includes the notion of who has to access to what.

++ A harrassment-free environment.

Expected Behavior

Editorial Policy

Respect other beings, present or not, appreciate the content that they left behind and the care that went into its production.

++ Corrections, additions, improvements, debugging are encouraged

++ There is also a value to the error. we accept that mistakes will be made, that they will be seen by others, and that this is what constitutes the experiences of learning in praxis. mistakes should be celebrated rather than hidden.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it, and also adhere to the campsite rule: leave things better than how you found them.

++ If you make a change, try to leave a trace. use the talk page (or your own system) for describing the changes you have made, especially if they are substantial and structural. By default, because this is a wiki, all changes that you make will leave a user trace. To make it easier for those who come after to follow your reasoning for these changes, your explanation is appreciated.

++ There is a difference between minor edits (small errors that do not affect the original content), structural edits (larger edits that correct errors or add new information that change the meaning of the original content), and stylistic edits (large or small edits that do not necessarily correct errors but rather reflect personal preferences.)

Communication

Mind the gaps.

++ Some people may not be super advanced in the use of wiki and its markup language. Accidents may happen and work might be lost or corrupted without any ill intention. Should you find yourself having to correct a situation of this kind, try to be constructive.

++ When bringing in new concepts or teaching others how things work: Communicate clearly and without condescension, avoiding jargon, acronyms or terms that are not familiar to most people. If you do use them, please explain in language that takes into account varying levels of skill and language fluency.

Accept and appreciate differences.

There is no such thing as a stupid question. We would like beginners, amateurs, and n00bs to feel safe enough to bring doubts to the table. This can only happen if we accept that RTFM (Read the Fucking Manual) philosophy has its limits. A caring and patient human around to help newcomers troubleshoot goes a long way. Also, nowhere is it written that only the experienced/professionally educated have all the answers.

At the risk of sounding like a Silicon Valley TED talk: Be courageous. Take on the burden of your own education.

++ If you need help with contributing to the wiki, there are manuals and documentation pages that can give you a push in the right direction. These have been prepared with care by the multiple custodians that this page has had over time.

++ Page custodians are human, there are limits to the time they can dedicate to being of service. Also, changes you make on the platform may take a little time to show up accordingly.


Licensing

Common sense

If you want to contribute to the wiki by uploading a file, or writing some content, please make sure that you're allowed to do so. By that we mean:

++ Consider the license of the material you're uploading, and contact the authors/copyright owners if necessary. If the license specifically prohibits you from using the material, don't use it.

++ If you're including material from other sources, give credit to their authors by referencing those sources accordingly.

Default

AT THE MOMENT all work on Beyond Social is by default published under the Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial ShareAlike 4.0 license. This means that anyone is free to:

Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.

Add your own

If you want to license your work under a specific license, feel free to add a note at the end of your contribution, mentioning the name of the chosen license. Feel free to even create your own, and add your new license to Topic:Licenses.

Visibility

We do not support the idea of headless entities that are nameless, as this could be a way to evade accountability. Should there be a need to veil the identity of anyone on this page for motives of safety, however, this is also acceptable. Levels of visibility are decided on a case to case basis, though the default is to be visible and thus accountable.
